Glass in garbage disposal won’t turn ongarbage disposal won't turn on

Last Sunday, our garbage disposal in the kitchen stopped grinding the food waste because my younger brother lose grip on the glass and it fell into the disposal and changed into pieces, then I have to open the device and pull out all the pieces of glass from inside the appliance.

I am writing this article for those who don’t know what to do when there is glass in the garbage disposal that won’t turn on. Continue to read it.

1. Switch off the garbage disposal

Whenever you see your disposal garbage or any electrical appliance is malfunctioning then before you begin to repair it, switch off its power and pull out the cord from the socket.

In the case of a garbage disposal device, it is even more important to pull out the cord because if it is turned on accidentally then your fingers may crush on it.

2. Take out the glass with needle-nose piler

Keep in mind that do not put your hands into the disposal because you may harm your fingers from the blades or pieces f glass.

For self-safety, you can use the needle-nose pliers to grip and pull out the broken glass from the device. You can also use the tweezers to pull out the big pieces of broken glass.

3. Stir the blades of the grinder manually

After pulling out the large pieces of glass now it’s time to remove the small pieces of glass so there should be nothing inside the disposal that could stop the blades to move.

Again I am repeating that don’t try to stir the blades with your hands. You can use a wrench or broom handle to move blades. Place the handle in the disposal and rotate the blades both ways.

This movement of blades will break down the glass and other waste. Repeat this proper until you feel that there are no more glass pieces in the disposal and the blades are not feeling the resistance now.

4. Run the water into the disposal

When you check that the blades are moving freely and there are no debris and glass pieces inside the disposal then insert the power cord into the socket and switch on the power of the device.

Now make a hot water solution with the baking soda or vinegar and pour it into the disposal drain. Let it run for 2 to 3 minutes so that it could clear all the remaining small pieces of the glass.

When you observe no humming sound coming from the disposal then you can dispose of the normal food waste inside the dispoal.

Important cautions

  • Do not make attempt to clear the glass pieces by turning on the disposal because it can damage any component or blades inside the unit.
  • Do not attempt to take the glass out with your hands.
