Marking the vent holes

Installing a new range hood vent starts with locating and marking the vent holes. If you are installing the range hood for the first time, unpack the package of the range hood.

Remove exhaust fan, filters, and electric housing cover from the unit. Newer hoods ideally come in a larger size which can easily reach the stovetop sides.

Take a suitable tool like hammer and screwdriver to unplug the knockouts from electric cables and add cable connectors to cable knockout.

Hold your hood vent with you want to fix the vent and mark locations with a pencil. Note that you need assistance by a helper to install the range hood vent ductwork.

Drilling locator holes

Select a better direction for vent, it should lead from indoors to outdoor directly without any long distance. Check if the stove is built with the exteriors otherwise you have to consult to maintenance/ home improvement specialist for creating a hole. Use proper safety equipment such as glasses and helmets to avoid any hazards.

Make a hole in the interior and exterior as well, for the interior you may need a hole saw. Take a long bit to drill all locators’ holes at each corner of the dedicated vent hole such as to reach the exterior as well.

Now you have to find locater holes marked on the outer side. Take a reciprocating saw or keyhole saw to make the hole. For better and easy installation of duct remove any insulation and debris, as debris makes the installation difficult.

Attaching Duct

After drilling holes, the next challenge is attaching the duct successfully. Check if the duct is long enough and if it can easily reach the range hood.

Now push the duct’s wall cap into the hole opening. You can purchase a duct extension if the duct cannot reach the range hood. Attach duct with a sheet metal screws, as it holds tight for a longer time.

After attaching the duct take a caulk and apply it to the sliding where the cap flange of the duct rests. After pushing the cap into a dedicated place take screws to fasten it tightly also caulk the perimeter of the flange.

Turn power and connect wires

Turn of the power and put switches in off position Before attaching cables and setting up the electric circuit. Take cables and run cables from a nearby junction box through the hole in the wall. The next step is attaching the cable to the range hood with cable connectors.

Once cables are connected put range hood securely with the help of a screws or mounting brackets into the studs. Note that a helper is needed for secure and safe setting of the range hood. For extending the wiring it’s recommended to consult the electrician and don’t play with electricity.

There are three types of wires white, black, and ground wire. Connect the white wire with the white lead, black wire to the black lead, and ground wire should be connected to the green lead.

Use an electrical cover after folding wires. Reattach fan and filter back to the range hood. Finally, turn on the power and test range vent.
